Digital image EXIF tags

Photos taken with modern digital cameras do not only contain the pixels of the image, they do also contain a certain amount of metadata. The metadata of digital photographs are often referred to under the name EXIF data or EXIF tags. Indeed the digital photos do contain many different types of metadata, like the EXIF, GPS, IPTC, the maker notes of the camera manufacturers and much more.

These pages will tell you what kind of information is stored in the metadata, how to show the various metadata like EXIF, IPTC etc, how to edit them, which software to use. You will also find detailed how to instructions and download links for various software solutions.

EXIF

The most important informations that photographers are looking for in the EXIF metadata are :
- the shutter speed
- the aperture
- the focal length
- the ISO sensitivity
- the white balance setting
- the date and time of creation of the photograph
These informations are stored automaticaly by digital cameras at the moment the photo is taken.

IPTC

The most important informations found in the IPTC metadata are :
- the keywords
- the category
- the location of the photograph's subject
These informations must be written into the metadata of the photo by the photographer (or someone else).

Of course there is much more information to be found in a photograph's metadata. Read our pages to find out more.
